This resource includes information on what graphemes and phoneme are. The individual speech sounds that make up words are called phonemes. The individual letters or groups of letters that represent the individual speech sounds are called graphemes. Understanding how graphemes map to phonemes is essential for learning to read or 'decode' words efficiently.

I have created these mats to be printed and laminated or added to a paper protecting pouch to be worked on with dry erase marker so that your kiddo or students an reuse these over and over again. Here, we go through different graphemes (groups of letters that represent individual speech sounds) such as oi, ai, oo, ay and more in a multisensory way so that all learners who use this tool can really grasp and REMEMBER how to decode words including these letter patterns.

Each mat includes a focus word, the focus grapheme, an opportunity for students to identidy the focus word amongst other words that include graphemes. They will be able to trace the word using its uppr and lowercase beginnin letter, map out different sounds as they tap them and finally, read a passage that includes the focus word and underline it.

This resource is something my tutoring students throughly enjoy and can easily stay focused on!

Whether you add these into your literacy rotations and have students build out the words on each card with playdoh or magnets, or you use them to assess where your readers are at phonetically as readers - these can be used in so many ways!
